Taskworks STEM Incursions - Physical Science and/or Design and Technology

Unique to Taskworks, designed for all primary levels and tailored to meet schools science and ICT requirements. Our new STEM Incursion is totally hands-on and the equipment is designed to fill the needs for teaching STEM as well as general physical sciences.

The Incursion offers children a chance to immerse themselves in mechanical, electrical and pneumatic design. It displays the basic operation of various machines as well as understanding Light and Sound.

Children are required to reason and use logical solutions to understand and solve problems.

How the day is run:

Six different pieces of equipment are set up in your hall or multi-purpose room. Children are split into groups of 6-10 and rotate around each piece of equipment. They spend approximately 10-15 mins on each apparatus.

Prior to working with the equipment, a detailed explanation is given on all the equipments operation. Teachers are asked to assist in helping their students whilst our staff move through the activities advising and teaching.

Worksheets outlining the principles and operation of all the equipment are provided to teachers prior to their visit.

Equipment Description

Steam Train

Construct a very large scale model steam train. Children are required to work together and disassemble an entire train leaving only the bare frame. No tools are required. They can observe the trains internal Drive mechanism which is used to drive the wheels. Next they reassemble the train and wire the low voltage motor, switches and battery. Now they are ready to drive the train! Basic motor wiring principles, gear operation and mechanics are the key to this very popular activity.

Robot / Creature

Disassemble and construct a life size "Creature". No tools are required as parts are designed to be interlock and fitted together by hand. All parts are constructed from lightweight aluminium. Test the children's imagination and have them work together to construct, screw and bolt together this unusual mechanical contraption.

Buzz Wire Game

Try your skills at beating the clock whilst guiding the hand-held loop along the meandering wire track. You need the right balance between speed and skill in order to reach the end of the wire without touching it. This game is great fun with lights, buzzers, timers and displays. It teaches children basic wiring principles and the operation of a simple circuit.

T-Works Maths Puzzle

Similar to other puzzles that have been around for a number of years our maths puzzle is one which calls for a lot of mathematical thinking. We've constructed 10-off large scale game pieces for the children to delve into. The game can be simple or difficult depending on the level you choose.

Sound Wave Generator

Control the vibration of a large speaker connected to a specially tensioned wire rope. Observe the vibrations and oscillations that sounds produce. Children have full control of the frequency, amplitude and wavelengths produced. They are introduced to the sounds we hear and the vibrations that create them. They can visually observe the waves being generated and discover the relationship between waves and sound.

Mini Stomp-a- Stump

If you've been to Taskworks then you'll know how much fun our action / reaction game called Stomp-a-Stomp is. Well now we've built a mini portable version. Problem is to get the game running you need to complete the basic air control circuit. When completed you control the game and the action, whilst your teammate now has even more fun trying to stomp on the stumps as they pop out of the floor. This game of pneumatics and physical activity keeps the children active and teaches them about basic air control circuits and the equipment used. Logic and teamwork are required to get the machine running as well as playing the game.
